Cotton vs. Terry Cloth vs. Microfiber: Which Fabric Makes the Best Bathrobe?

Choosing a bathrobe isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about performance. The fabric you choose directly affects how a robe feels, how it fits, how long it lasts, and how well it holds up to everyday use. At Robeworks, we’ve spent over 30 years designing robes for five-star hotels, spas, and discerning customers around the world. If you’re serious about comfort—and want your robe to last—understanding the difference between cotton, terry cloth, and microfiber is essential.

Let’s break down how each of these materials works, especially when used in a robe.

1. Cotton: Natural, Breathable, but Not Always Durable

Cotton is one of the most commonly used materials in robes. It’s soft, breathable, and easy to source. On the surface, it seems like the obvious choice for comfort, and in many cases, it is. Cotton robes are light, flexible, and great for warmer climates. They feel familiar, simple, and often affordable.

But cotton alone has drawbacks when used in a bathrobe. The fabric tends to shrink after repeated washes. It also loses shape over time and can start to feel worn within a year or two of frequent use. Cotton does a decent job of absorbing moisture but can feel damp for longer periods after a shower or bath. For luxury spas or personal use where performance and longevity matter, cotton alone doesn’t quite hold up.

2. Terry Cloth: Soft, Absorbent, and Spa-Ready

Terry cloth is a fabric made by weaving or knitting loops into the fabric surface. Those loops give it a textured, plush feel and make it highly absorbent—exactly what you want after stepping out of the shower or hot tub. Many of the world’s best spas and hotels, including Robeworks partners like Chateau Marmont and Ashford Castle, choose robes with a terry cloth lining for this reason. It delivers instant warmth and moisture-wicking comfort.

However, terry cloth isn’t perfect. It’s bulkier than cotton or microfiber, and its thick loops are more likely to break down over time with regular washing. Terry cloth robes tend to get heavier after absorbing water and take longer to dry. While the fabric feels incredibly comfortable at first, it can lose softness and structure without proper care. In high-use environments (or homes where robes are worn and washed weekly) terry cloth on its own can wear out faster than you’d expect.

3. Microfiber: Lightweight, Durable, and Built to Last

Microfiber is a synthetic material made from finely woven fibers of polyester, nylon, or both. It’s known for being lightweight, smooth to the touch, and extremely durable. A microfiber robe offers a clean silhouette and resists pilling, fading, and stretching. It also dries quickly and performs well in high-humidity environments, making it ideal for post-shower routines, poolside lounging, or warm-weather mornings.

The main downside? Microfiber lacks the plush, looped texture that gives terry cloth its classic spa feel. On its own, it can feel slightly too slick or synthetic for people who prefer a cozier interior experience. That’s why microfiber robes alone don’t always deliver the comfort people expect in a luxury robe.

The Robeworks Solution: Microfiber Exterior, Terry Cloth Interior

After decades of refinement, we’ve found the ideal construction: a microfiber exterior paired with a terry cloth interior. The terry inside offers warmth, absorbency, and softness where it matters most—against your skin. The microfiber exterior provides structure, durability, and long-term performance. It keeps the robe looking clean and polished, even after hundreds of washes.

This dual-fabric design means you get the best of both worlds. A robe that feels luxurious the moment you put it on and performs like a professional-grade garment day after day. Whether you’re outfitting a boutique hotel or simply looking for the last robe you’ll ever need, this combination delivers.
